About - Esty Meidan

Artistic Statement

I reside and work in Israel. I am the daughter of holocaust survivors from Europe. During my studies at Beit Berl College, I specialized in painting and printing.

Over the last twelve years, photography has become a central component of my work. I have worked on ongoing projects located in public areas, such as the "Reading End" project – a journey through Reading Parking Lot that explores the concepts of space, home, alienation, change and loneliness.

Gradually, my search has transitioned from the external to the internal. Shedding its documenting aspirations, my lens has adopted a poetic perspective.

In recent years, I create "still life" from simple and "cheap" synthetic materials, creating multi-layered worlds that blur the boundaries between real and fake.

Using an excessive visual language of saturated colors and forms, I challenge viewers and raise questions about aesthetics, beauty and what is true and what is fiction. My goal is to find and express my very own version of alternative beauty.

Crafting art from artificial materials that "disguise" as "dead" organic nature allows me to construct worlds filled with mystery that are equally threatening and tempting – and insert myself inside them.

The art I create is inspired by my family's history. I use my childhood memories and shreds of the past to build alternative worlds filled with excess. A disharmony created via color, shape and material echo a past disrupted.

Although intuitive hand-drawing and digital photography allegedly represent different worlds, the themes and emotional experiences I attempt to express carry a common thread.
